While the engine and main gearbox shield the front underside, the transfer case is inherently located relatively low in the center of the vehicle and requires uncompromising protection from below during tough off-road use.

However, those who drive the heavy vehicle appropriately over rocky trails, through deep ruts, over crests, or in tough forestry operations expose the underside, particularly the middle underbody area, to extreme dangers. When driving over crests, hard embankment edges, or massive tree stumps in the undergrowth, the center of the vehicle is highly vulnerable. If the heavy Land Cruiser hits hard here, there is a risk of cracks or fractures in the sensitive aluminum housing of the transfer case, damage to the actuator unit for the all-wheel drive control, and fatal oil loss – which immediately paralyzes the entire all-wheel drive and results in extremely expensive repair costs.
